Frequently Asked Questions

What form of martial arts do you teach at Coquitlam Martial Arts?

At Coquitlam Martial Arts we have two main programs: Striking and Grappling.

  • “Striking”: Which we call “Kickboxing” but specifically is a mix of Kickboxing, Boxing, and Muay Thai techniques.
  • “Grappling”:  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, including Nogi, and wrestling.

Both areas of study are effective and practical for self defense and are a great workout! We also have Fitness Kickboxing classes which are focused on fitness and conditioning.

What age group do you offer classes for?

We offer classes for all age ranges starting 4 years old. If you feel you are interested in martial arts do not let age be what holds you back. If you are interested in trying it’s never too late to start.

  • Kids Program: 4-6
  • Youth Program: 7-11
  • Teen Program: 12-17
  • Adult Program: 18+

How often should I attend classes?

Our martial arts curriculum is based on a 2x per week program however if you are looking to get into better shape or are interested in committing further to your martial arts training there are opportunities available for training every day.

What should I wear on my first day?

On your first day wear clothes that you will be comfortable being active in. If you are participating in the cardio kickboxing class, we will have boxing gloves for you to borrow. If you are participating in the martial arts program, we will have a uniform to lend you on your first day, which you can purchase later if you decide to continue.

How safe is it to learn martial arts for me or my kids?

Learning martial arts is dangerous!!! But not for you, for anybody who decides to challenge you to a duel.

How will training at Coquitlam Martial Arts benefit my child?

Martial arts have many benefits both physical and mental. On the physical side, martial arts will help to improve coordination, strength, and cardiovascular fitness. But equally and perhaps even more important to us is helping to create students who go out and have a positive influence in their community. At Coquitlam Martial Arts we strive to instill core values such as respect, discipline, hard work and humility into students and all things that we believe will help them to succeed in life inside and outside of martial arts.

My child has a learning or physical disability or is special needs. Can they participate in martial arts?

We take all students on a case-by-case basis however we have experience teaching students with a wide range of backgrounds and have had great success so far. There are options available so if you would like to bring them in, please contact us and we will arrange a trial class.

Will martial arts make my child more aggressive?

At Coquitlam Martial Arts we strictly prohibit violence/aggressive behaviour outside of the dojo. We enforce that the techniques that we teach are to be used solely for self-defence. We also believe in teaching our students how to control and manage their emotions as it is imperative to us that we are not simply teaching people to be more dangerous but in fact are teaching them to be more controlled.

Do you Spar in class?

During classes we focus on teaching the techniques and practice controlled partner drills.  For those that enjoy sparring we have a separate class that’s all sparring!

What if I have never tried martial arts or I’m out of shape?

We have classes available for all levels of skill and fitness. If you have never done martial arts before, great! That is what we are here to help change. If you feel you are out of shape, no problem, we are happy to help get you started on your journey to a healthier lifestyle. We will always be here to help give you a push in the right direction but are always willing to modify exercises to the student’s current abilities.

I’d like to try a class, how do I get started?

The best thing to do is to come in and give it a try. No amount of words or videos can replace the feeling of really trying the class. We have a no commitment 2 class trial option available where we will provide you with everything you will need to participate in the classes. After you have experienced the classes and met the instructors you can then decide what your martial arts journey will look like from there.
